Varsity Edges Out Marshall 2-1 In Double Overtime
In their second consecutive overtime win, the Wildcats earned a victory with only 4 minutes remaining in double overtime.
The Wildcat offense kept knocking on the door with 14 shots on goal during regular play and another 7 in the second overtime period, but the Marshall goalie managed to stop all but two.
Centreville's first goal came with only 4 minutes remaining in the second half, when Molly MacDonnell inserted a penalty corner to Haili Hartman, who took a lift shot and scored. Marshall countered only 1 minute later with a quick goal to tie the game. Both teams remained scoreless in the first 15-minute overtime period.
Centreville's speed and stamina came into play in the second overtime, with Coach Doran completing a rapid succession of substitutions on the field to keep the girls fresh. Eventually, Centreville was awarded a penalty corner with only 4:15 left in the second overtime. After a prolonged scuffle in front of the goal, Hartman was able to get the ball past Marshall's goalie and into the goal for the victory.
Besides Hartman and MacDonnell, the following Wildcats should be recognized for an outstanding game: On offense, Sasha Rocke for great passing and Stacey McCormack for deflecting long hits by both teams. In midfield, Susie Lesniewski, Emily Bollman, and Vicky LaLiberte for stops, dribbles, and long hits. On defense, Rachel Behne and Katy Kelly for stopping the Marshall offense and making the job of the Centreville goalies easier. The goalies were Carolyn Macek (first half and both overtimes, 2 saves) and Betsy McCracken (second half).
